[ARCHIVED] PSE&G Meter Replacement

PSE&G contractors CONTRACT CALLER INC. (CCI)  are currently working in the City of Clifton to replace existing electric meters with new Smart Meters throughout portions of the city.  These meters will perform several new important functions, including improving remote meter reading and billing and providing more discrete information about electrical outages for example during a storm. When fully operational, this investment will also enable customers to better manage their own electric usage during the day and night, such as for charging an electric car during off-peak hours.

The change out of the electric meter is at no cost to the customer. If a customer so chooses to keep their old meter then they can do so. However when the program is fully operational, they will be charged a monthly fee of $12. This will cover the need to manually read and enter this information for billing purposes. If they later decide to change out their meter then there will be no charge.

Individual letters have already been mailed out to the residents whose meters we intend to replace this year in the city. This represents about a third of the residents in the city, with another third next year and compete by 2024 with the entire city. If we miss a home, then our contractors will hang door hangers (see link below). All contractors will have the ID badge shown below and their trucks will be as shown in the photo.

The contractor will also wear the required hard hat and safety shield when performing this work. If meters are outside a home then there would be no need to go inside a home.  However for those meters inside a home then the contractor will seek access for this stated purpose. They will wear a Covid mask when entering the house.

I am writing since we have heard some concerns about residents asking if this is a legitimate program. Some have called the police to inquire as well. Certainly safety is our primary concern. If they are unsure, they can call (908) 325-4020 to inquire.  We encourage them to go to https://nj.myaccount.pseg.com/myservicepublic/smartmeters [nam10.safelinks.protection.outlook.com] to find out more information about smart meters.

Thank you for your support of PSE&G.
